Peter Lawson Civil Action
Press Release July 20, 2020
For Immediate Release
The Steiner Law Firm, PLLC files a $10,000,000.00 Civil-Rights Action against NYC after NYPD Officers brutally beat, tased, and ripped dreadlocks out of the scalp of a former NYC Golden Gloves Champion, who is now a community youth leader.
Queens, NY: On June 4, 2020, in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder and in the midst of worldwide reckoning against police brutality towards people of color, the NYPD Officers pulled up to Peter Lawson’s home and acted brazenly and violently against an African American man who was not violating any laws and was in his home. The NYPD Officers claimed they were responding to an alleged “noise complaint phoned into 311.”
Fortunately, a home security camera captured the incident as Mr. Lawson was tased, beaten, and had his dreadlocks ripped out of his head in front of his 3-year-old son and family. The video shows that the NYPD Officers manufactured the violent encounter (see video link below).
Mr. Lawson was arrested, wrongfully charged with Felony Assault on the police (a crime that carries a potential sentence of 7 years), arraigned and later released on $7,500.00 bail.
On June 16, 2020, Mr. Lawson was fortunate to meet with 2 sympathetic elected officials, who were no longer tolerant of NYPD abuse of their constituents. The very next day all criminal charges were dismissed by the Queens County District Attorney.
While we recognize and admire the brave officers of the NYPD who dutifully serve our community, the recently filed $10,000,000.00 Civil-Rights-Violation Action is necessary to modify the tolerance of the NYPD towards its few bad apples.
Attorney Norman Steiner has been fighting against police brutality and protecting civil rights in NYC for over 25 years.
